May Butterfly

It’s May 1st!

I knew that means it’s May Day today but I looked it up at NationalCalendar.com and discovered it’s also the start of National Asparagus Month, National Stroke Awareness Month, National Military Appreciation Month, National Motorcycle Awareness Month, Sturge-Weber Syndrome Awareness, National Mental Health Awareness Month, National Brain Cancer and Brain Tumor Awareness Month, Date Your Mate Month, Foster Care Month, Older Americans Month, National Barbecue Month, National Bike Month, National Blood Pressure Month, National Chocolate Custard Month, National Chamber Music Month, National Cystic Fibrosis Month, National Egg Month, National Get Caught Reading Month, National Hamburger Month, National Lyme Disease Awareness Month, National Mediterranean Diet Month, National Photograph Month, National Recommitment Month, National Salad Month, National Salsa Month, National Strawberry Month, Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, National Water Safety Month, Melanoma Awareness Month,  AND National Moving Month!!

Which one(s) will you be celebrating?

While you are thinking about that I do have a butterfly to share with you 🙂

Loosely inspired by a Lacewing…ok, not really a butterfly… perhaps we should call it a Year of Flying Insects?

A closer look? And how about those wings? So the outlines and body are chainstitch, the antennae are stem stitch and the wings are rows of buttonhole stitch, worked in different directions to add interest.

And, because two are better than one, here’s another one with a little cross stitch added.I’m sorry, I haven’t finished stitching the wool example yet… but I did meet a deadline yesterday. I’ll be able to show you what has been keeping me busy any days I’ve been home this month by the beginning of September!

The diagrams are all available under the Year of Butterflies button up top. Thank you to Julia for making that happen. Don’t forget to post pictures of your progress on our Facebook page.

I’m off to the Bloomington Quilt Guild in Indiana today. I’m ready for the construction this time. The weather forecast is good and I’m looking forward to having a great visit. The plan is to get to that wool lacewing after I get back…

Oh, I like your Lacewing ~ ~ and am overwhelmed with all of the reasons/excuses to celebrate!!! So think I will celebrate beauty and beautiful moments instead 🙂 I love both of your examples and can’t wait to get them copied and ready to stitch. I’m a bit behind, but still enjoying the process and pictures on Facebook.

Thank you again for sharing with us. Your art is so lovely and rich.

I may be confused, but the last drawing looks like a whole butterfly and May is a side view.
