Embroidery samplers

My Spoonflower order came just as I was heading off to Florida so I knew I had a fun project waiting for me on my return.

I caught up on lots of recorded TV as I stitched. Really, Grey’s Anatomy people what were you thinking?

I chose eight colors for the backgrounds of my new printed samplers. I started with the grey one and some 8 wt. perle cotton in variegated pinks from House of Embroidery.

I enjoyed trying different stitches…

Next I used the orange background and shades of green purple and blue thread.

The bullion stitches and continuous cross stitch came out well!

The outside square is around eight and a half inches on each side.

Now I’m working on a pink one with pastel threads…

Handwork is never quick. It takes me about eight hours to complete each sample so I don’t expect my students to go home with a finished piece but I think they are more fun than drawing some lines on a piece of white fabric. I’ll be using them in a class at the end of the month in Iowa. I’m looking forward to getting some feedback before I add to my sampler range.

Now I need to get upstairs and clean my sewing room again! How can one person working on their own make such a mess? I certainly have no one else to take the blame…

I love your sampler. Do you have any extra for sale. I would like to do another embroidery project. Cruised with you in Nov, 2014.

I enjoy your blog. Is this a kit or something you designed? I have been wanting to learn embroidery (I do counted cross stitch) but don’t know where to start. Do you have a book you would recommend for a newbie?
    Thanks.

Hi Karen, It’s a little sampler I designed to make my embroidery classes more fun. Any book by Judith Baker Montano will have great inspiration and lots of stitch pictures and diagrams. There are lots of videos on-line that people like too!
