A little break in Nashville, Tennessee

Steve and I don’t often set off to the same place at the same time but we managed it over the weekend and we had a good time!

We left Midway at 7.30 in the evening on Friday, with a last look over the city as we curved around to head South.IMG_7855Steve is very patient with me and I got to have the window seat so I could look out and try and get some pictures of the sunset. We were on the right side of the plane, but we must have been heading southeast more than I expected and the sun was behind the wing…

Nashville is such a fun place to fly into. There was live music playing at Tootsies and it would have been fun to stay and listen a while, but Jonathan was waiting for us, so we walked on past…

Jonathan and Lauren had lots planned for Saturday. We started with brunch at Tavern with its two for one libations… with Lauren as the designated driver there was no need to deprive ourselves!

Suitably nourished we headed southwards to Craft South, somewhere I’d been looking forward to visiting since QuiltCon. The store was bigger than I expected, with off street parking at the back of the store.

The large classroom is on the left as you enter through the front door.IMG_7870A nice selection of modern quilting cottons is neatly arranged on the shelves.IMG_7871The store is owned by Anna Maria Horner so you would expect to find evidence of that. There were some her pretty embroideries on display.IMG_7872The bathroom was nice!IMG_7875I found a few things I needed to buy including cat fabric for Miss Ruby…IMG_7876

The sangria from brunch helped me add some Liberty lawn and a Guatemalan hand made belt into the mix… We’ll have to wait a few weeks to see what I do with them?

Next we headed over to East Nashville for a little wander. These mailboxes caught my eye.

IMG_7877We’d booked tickets for the Grand Ole Opry in the evening. Here are Steve and Jonathan before we went in.IMG_7882

What a fun evening! I’d not heard of most of the performers on stage except for Vince Gill. That’s not because they weren’t legends of country music … I just don’t know much! The place was packed and we had great seats on the second row of the balcony. I certainly got an education.

Sunday we went to church with Jonathan and Lauren and enjoyed a potluck lunch. Tasty fried chicken and wonderful pie! Back home, Jonathan and Steve enjoyed a dip in the pool but I sat in the sun and stitched a little…

Monday’s weather forecast was not good for the late afternoon so we set off in the morning for the Frist Center in downtown Nashville. There was an Italian car exhibit. I liked this orange one…

IMG_7901The museum used to be the main Post Office building in Nashville. It is a lovely building. The floors attracted my attention and my featured image today is a  photo of the woodblock floor on the second level.

With the car safely parked in the museum parking lot we ventured down the hill to Broadway where 4th of July celebrations were well under way. We lingered over lunch while two quick storms blew through and then marched back up the hill to retrieve the car and return home before the next storm arrived…

Our firework experience was limited to watching them on the TV! I’m afraid sitting in the rain in a muddy field is not my idea of fun. We started with New York, moving on to Boston and finished with the Nashville pyrotechnics. We could actually hear them exploding outside as we watched them on the screen. That was quite good enough for me.

We flew home this morning. I’ve done the laundry and got my bags ready to head out again in the morning. I’m off to Knoxville until Saturday for two days of classes and a lecture with the Village Quilters in Loudon.

I have drawn a winning name from all the comments on last week’s post. I’m waiting to hear from the winner and then I’ll tell you who it is. I do love comments. I hope you’ll keep them coming, even when there isn’t a prize at stake. My embroidery has now moved to Africa. There will be pictures soon!

Sounds like great fun, Catherine!! I’ve visited the Frist and while I enjoyed the art, the beautiful Art Deco architecture of the building was what really caught my attention!
