Road to Virginia 2025

Last Wednesday found me at the airport with my two big suitcases checking in for a flight to Richmond, Virginia. It’s an easy two hour journey. Ride share cars are allowed right up to the arrivals building which certainly makes things a lot simpler!

I was excited to be in town for the first ever Road to Virginia Quilt Show. I was booked for four machine quilting classes over three days.

Thursday morning started bright and early with Walking Foot Quilting One. An introductory class, three hours long.

This was followed by Walking Foot Quilting Two… adding the fancy bits!

Friday was a full day Walking Foot Class… all of everything.

Saturday was Free Motion Quilting

I think you get the general idea? It was machine quilting all day, every day! I was in the Pfaff room and the machines hummed along very nicely. I’m hoping everyone has got home and is now making those quilt tops into quilts.

In between times I did get a little while to explore the show floor where there was a good selection of vendors and  a wide variety of quilts to amuse and entertain. Dinner with Sue Spargo and family was a highlight on Friday night. Pictures are sadly lacking 🙂

I decided I didn’t want to take the early morning flight on Sunday morning. I find it difficult to get a good night’s sleep when I know I need to get up at 5 AM! That meant I had the day at leisure to visit the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts.

Entrance to the museum is free but I bought an advance ticket for the exhibition Frida: Beyond the Myth. That meant I was definitely committed to going. I had a super day. I’m used to visiting the Chicago Art Institute where it is always busy and you have to wait your turn to get a good look at the paintings. The Richmond museum was a lot quieter and I didn’t feel rushed at all. The paintings were combined with photographs and short movie clips to tell Frida’s complicated life story.

This is a photograph taken in 1939 by Nickolas Muray.

There was a photo opportunity in the next room. I was attempting to take a selfie when a very kind person offered to help me out…

I think I have a lot more to smile about than Frida ever did.

I enjoyed the rest of the museum too, including lunch in the cafe and a walk through the outside gardens.

Time to return to the hotel to pick up my bags and get to the airport. No problems there… but then… it started storming and a ground stop was enforced…  Enough to say it was one in the morning by the time I got home. Always an adventure!

I had a fun day yesterday but that’s a story for another day.
