On Tuesday evening Nancy Lee Chong (Pacific Rim Quilt Company, www.prqc.com ) came to RQG to talk about Hawaiian applique. She was a fun, engaging speaker and gave us lots of information and handy tips as she shared her quilts with us.
She was talking about the wonderful quilt she had made for her daughter at this point and doing a pretty good impersonation of a 13 year old. Nancy has a very animated and expressive face!
We then had lots of show and tell. Stash reduction seems to be the name of the game at the moment and, combined with the UFO challenge we’ve got going, it makes for some interesting stories.
Lorraine had been very busy. Here she is with one of the quilts she has been busy stitching..
Marinda had finished her Phil Beaver piece from 2005…
Her hand painted fabrics were wonderful… and Yvette had finished this original Irish inspired quilt…
And then home again, to come back the next day for Nancy’s workshop.
We had the 2-Fabric Applique Quilt class. Everyone could choose the pattern they wanted to work with. Nancy gave us very detailed instructions every step of the way.
I really appreciated the advice on how to hold my hands so as not to strain them (something I have had physical therapy for in the past…) and the best tip ever on handling inside curves on hand applique. We learnt a traditional Hawaiian technique for the valleys which I loved. (It’s all on a DVD you can get at Nancy’s web site…)
After teaching us as a group we got individual questions answered…
This is what I was aiming for…
This was after the class…
and this is after staying up too late last night …
A little wobbly in places but ready for quilting… Maybe I’ll do some more hand applique… I’d like to do the negative version of this “Mini Blossom”…
Today I am off to Tennessee with Kathy. We have a bed frame strapped to the top of the car for her son in Bowling Green and Jonathan has plans for us in Nashville. I have selected suitable quilt stores for rest stops, so we are ready for an adventure!!
