Five days in Iceland!

I am way behind in writing my blog so today I am going to miss out a whole month and just post some pretty pictures from last week’s trip to Iceland with my sister Bridget!

When we lived in England, Iceland was a frozen food store at the bottom of our street 🙂

Last year I met up with Bridget in New York, two hours for me, six for her. This year that was reversed. I set off Monday evening, arriving very early on Tuesday. Bridget just had to fly North a couple of hours. We met at the airport and took the shuttle bus into Reykjavik to our hotel. We had a few ideas for how to spend our time but agreed we did not want to go home exhausted…

Our hotel had a lovely spa, complete with sauna, cold room, and warm plunge pool, a novel experience for me. No pictures but we visited three times.

We wandered around town from our very central location, walking around four miles each day.

This is Hallgrimskirkja, a Lutheran church with a distinctive silhouette.

We did some shopping but left this rather striking Viking helmet on the shelf.

Christmas lights were appearing, more each day.

We went on a mini bus trip along the South coast to see waterfalls,

A black sand beach,

Small towns,

And a glacier, (melting back 200m a year)

But of course what we really wanted to do was see the Northern Lights…

We went out two nights on expeditions and saw them both nights!!

We have LOTS of pictures. I put one of my favorites at the top of this post and this is one that the tour guide took of us, on a ten second exposure with a fill in flash.

We were suitably dressed but let me tell you it was COLD out there in the field!!

One last picture of the city from the Perlan museum which stands on a hill… the path up to it was steep and icy but it was definitely worth the trek.

I flew home yesterday afternoon, landing back in Chicago half an hour after we took off.

It was an excellent trip. We have next year’s meet up planned already.

And I got back to work today. My pile of stitched samples is growing!!

I’ll return to quilty blog posts very soon. I’ve got lots to share…
