Staying Happy!

I’m still quilting my big quilt… I’m limiting myself to an hour and a half at the machine at a time. Then I take a break and work on something else, put in some laundry, answer e-mail, anything that makes me get up and change position… It’s not that I’m not enjoying watching the quilting design grow but I’m very mindful of making sure that I can still move at the end of the day. I don’t have time to waste having a bad back!

My supplies are coming together for next week at Festival. On Saturday I’m going to be teaching my Happy Scrappy Improv class. I will take a few sample quilts for inspiration and now I have another one.

This was where I left it after the class in Champaign a few weeks ago.

IMG_5813I moved some units around and added more strips, layered and quilted it to get this…
IMG_5961 (1)Looking good?

I’ve got a new embroidery sample on the go in the family room so my threads were handy… I added some fly stitches in purple #8 perle cotton from Wonderfil.IMG_5974And here we are.

IMG_5970Just a little more interesting? Now it’s done. Flying High.

I am realizing that I always tend towards the improv log cabin type of construction. I’ll try and do something different next time… I’m so glad my students feel free to do their own thing in class. I’m looking forward to seeing what happens next week. The class description asks students to bring a bag of scraps and their happy thoughts.

Fun times ahead!

Catherine that is just beautiful. I’ve been looking at Kantha stitched quilts and it reminds me of those. I love the touch of embroidery. It just makes it shine!

Catherine as always your quilt is lovely. The fly stiches make it!
I was glad to see you sharing the thought of getting up after an hour or an hour and a half and doing something else. It is very important to do a few little exercises to avoid carpal tunnel when you sew or knit. Please encourage people to look these up on the internet. Continue to have fun!!!

I’ve always made a point of moving and doing something else after about 30 minutes of sitting, having a friend who has spent the past 4 weeks in hospital with nerve pain possibly exacerbated by a very extended session of rotary cutting has really drummed in that you MUST MOVE to a different position at regular intervals.
I am loving your quilt, especially the touch of embroidery, I tend to lean towards the improv log cabin as well, sometimes I add triangles depending on how I feel. So long as I am enjoying the making that is all that really matters.

So amazing to see the finished product. I need to work on my vision…being able to start and have no fear of where I am going. Is there a secret?
