Bold Hand Stitching as Your Quilting Line… anyone?

You might know that I enjoy machine quilting my quilts but I do also like my hand work…

One class that seems to fill well is Bold Hand Stitching as Your Quilting Line… it sold out at Houston and at AQS Quilt Week in Paducah.

I finalized the details for my September visit to the Old Capitol Quilters Guild in Iowa City last week and I’ll be teaching it there. I like to send class samples to help the guilds fill the workshops and I realized that I didn’t have many samples, especially as I am teaching it before September and need samples to show in  the classes…

What to do? make some new samples of course 🙂

The supply list asks students to bring a 15″ block or small quilt to stitch on so I made two blocks, just something simple.

I used some Kaffe Collective prints and co-ordinating solids for a graphic design that would show the stitching well. I sandwiched the square with some Quilters Dream wool batting and did a little stitch in the ditch to stabilize it. (We thread baste in class where we don’t have machines.)

I marked the stitching lines with my Bohin mechanical chalk pencil and stitched with #8 perle cotton.

And ta da!
A sampler of all the different stitches I teach, and a few beads too…Let’s do a second block? So much fun!Love the seed stitch. Two new samples made, just like that! I might have watched a little HGTV and a couple of Columbo episodes while I was stitching…

If you’re not a member of the Old Capitol Quilters you can catch the class at Stitches Midwest! (Schaumburg, IL August) – click the icon at the side, or at Quilt Festival in Houston (November) or at Road to California (Ontario, CA January 2019). Bold hand stitching is quicker than traditional hand quilting and it looks good too!

It does indeed look like so much fun! Even more fun if you could do a Craftsy class like this. I’m starting to think pillows for holiday gifts this year and this kind of stitching would be delightful. TFS
