A class or two at PHF

It’s always a fun time at Pieceful Heart Fabrics when we get a class of Quilters and Children in the shop…

Our June class was no exception. We had a full classroom of students eager to tackle the pattern Kings Ransom by Villa Rosa designs. There were moms and children(including a son), grandma and grand daughter combinations, and six members from three generations of one family…

We took strip sets and sewed them together,

lined things up carefully,

kept on sewing,

cut sections apart to make four patches,

pressed our blocks to minimize the bump in the middle…

and then went to the design wall to arrange our quilt tops,

and sewed them together.

There was still some homework left to be done at the end of the class but all summer is waiting… I am hoping to get some pictures of finished quilts sometime soon!

Three hours is a long time for anyone to concentrate on a project and the children did really well. A few days later we had the five hour Groovy Mama class. I wasn’t sure how the class would go. When I made my sample a while ago I had a few challenges sewing all the straight lines (grooves) because it was hard to mark the lines accurately once everything was layered. I had been thinking about the problem and decided to get some masking tape to help…  I went shopping at that “helpful place”… Ace Hardware had 0.7” tape which worked great!

Here are our groovers at work.

You can see the tape in action here. The grooves are sewn 0.75″ apart so we just had to sew right next to the tape. Sewing actually on the tape is not good because it gums up the needle really quickly but nobody seemed to have that problem.

In fact everyone ended the day with really even straight lines and even better, everyone was still smiling…

I have never had a five hour class where the time sped by so fast. I worked on a table runner shaped piece. It was ready for the clothes line demo by the end of the time.

Now all it needs is the binding. That’s a job for next week…

I seem to have quite a few projects in progress at the moment. I am thinking there will be further  updates after the weekend.
