Modern Machine Quilting: Free Motion DVD Blog Hop. Day Three

Today’s guest blogger is the irrepressible, amazing, hopeless scrapaholic, Bonnie Hunter from Wallburg, North Carolina!

I met Bonnie on the Caribbean Cruise fifteen months ago. This is a terrible picture of the teacher line-up on the last evening, along with Jim West, the owner of Sew Many Places. Left to right there’s Bonnie, me, Jim, Kim Diehl and Pam Holland.DSCN3621Too much fun!

Here’s Bonnie’s proper picture from her web site so you’d know her if you saw her…10312865_10152429900433909_5862518246667886785_n (1)

Bonnie has a hectic teaching schedule that takes her all over the world. She has published many, many patterns and books, writes a regular magazine column, has an on-line class… She takes her sewing with her wherever she goes. Read all about her at Quiltville!

After I finished the quilted writing segment on the DVD I moved onto stippling, not my favorite stitch but very popular, and useful in the right place.

Quiltbug describes stippling as “closely spaced quilting stitches following an irregular design that does not cross used to fill background space and create surface texture” and that sums it up very nicely. Easily described but not so easy to stitch!

I learnt to stipple from master quilter Diane Gaudynski and it’s her method I describe on the DVD, a form of echo quilting… and it works!

Here’s a little quilt I made that has a wool batt inside, a simple grid made with the walking foot and then stipples stitched in the hour-glass  shapes to add lots of texture and contrast with the unstitched triangles.
IMG_2532 The feather around the outside comes later!!

I hope you are enjoying following along on the blog hop. Here again is the full schedule of my quiltie friends taking part in the adventure.

Thursday January 7th Me!
Friday January 8th  Faith Jones
Saturday January 9th Bonnie Hunter
Sunday January 10th Svetlana Sotak
Monday January 11th Kim Niedzwiecki (Aurifil)
Tuesday January 12th Julia Wood
Wednesday January 13th Susan Brubaker Knapp
Thursday January 14th Jenny Lyon
Friday January 15th  Kathy Matthews
Saturday January 16th Me again!

Remember you need to comment back here on my blog to be in with a chance of winning a prize. I have to say the odds are considerably better than winning the PowerBall this weekend..

If you want to follow my blog in the future please sign up at Bloglovin using the link at the top right of this page. I usually try to write about ten times a month.

Then, because I do love to be liked, why not like me on Facebook? Once you’ve done that you’ll need to click on that little arrow on the like button to choose what you want to show up in your feed. I often post pics of my adventures or work in progress between blog posts.

Oh yes! …. the DVD is available now at the Interweave store… just click on the widget on the right hand side.

See you back here tomorrow.

  401. OH my! How I would love to get my hands on your DVD!! I have no other way to “quilt” my quilts as I have no long arm or quilting frames. I have quilted a few baby quilts on my machine, but at that time I hadn’t met Bonnie Hunter and I just did my own thing. So, I just sewed around the major figures in the material. I am so so anxious to learn how you go about quilting as you do it!! I have a good feeling about my chance So! Yep, I think I’m going to win this time!! I learned about you through Bonnie Hunter’s blog!
