Class time in Birmingham

Tuesday morning found me back with the quilters for the first of the two classes we had booked.

There was good turn out for Happy Scrappy Improv quilts and after the introduction and demo everyone set to work.IMG_6288Units appeared at a steady pace and by lunchtime we were ready for our gallery walk.

Narrow strips, wedges and curved piecing…
IMG_6298Interesting pieces that we could use for an alternative gridwork demo.IMG_6294I’m hesitant about using someone’s work for a demo because I don’t want to prevent the maker from making their own piece. I was so glad to see that this quilter didn’t feel constrained in any way. This is what she had stitched together by the end of the day.IMG_6318And look how it floats when put on a background of that twig fabric…IMG_6320

How cool is that?

Jeanette was taking her first ever class. She put her pieces together to form this little quilt.IMG_6326

Did you notice the 1/4″ strips all the way around?

Rebecca posed next to her wall hanging. She likes birds!IMG_6336Here’s the whole class looking suitably happy before they went home.
IMG_6343It’s always good when people bring some show and tell to class. I had shown a couple of round pieces at my lecture but nothing as fun as this.IMG_6309Even better in close up!IMG_6310Embroidery, beading…this quilt had it all.

We went out for Barbecue for dinner. I couldn’t resist a picture of the vegetable section on the menu…IMG_6383

I resisted the peach cobbler as a vegetable, selecting the fried okra and squash casserole as my sides. I did have a large piece of lemon pie for dessert. When in the South eat Southern food!! Everything was so tasty.

Back to class on Wednesday morning for Walking Foot Quilting.IMG_6399We had a very full class. Machines hummed and lots got done. Everyone did good work, trying lots of new techniques to get their quilts finished. The time whizzed by and before I knew it it was time to pack up my bags to leave town before the traffic got bad.

Hence no group picture…

Suzanne took me south to meet my good friend Julia who was taking me to my next port of call.

Goodbye Birmingham. Until next time.

Hello Auburn!
